The World Series of Poker
Without a doubt, the most famous poker event in the world is the World Series of Poker. This event is held annually in Las Vegas where it draws an incredible amount of spectators
The first time the World Series of Poker was played was during 1970 and was played in the Horseshoe Casino. It is doubtful whether or not the casino owner, Benny Binion, knew he was starting something that would glamorize poker when he invited the six best poker players in the world to play in a game. While Binion might not have expected the event to take off, that is exactly what happened. In a mere 12 years the event had grown from a mere 6 players to 52.
It was during the 1980′s that the World Series of Poker satellite first caught the attention of people who weren’t closely connected to poker. It was during this time that NBC started to film the event. Today there are people who make a point to watch the event every single year. Others have actually started to plan their family vacations so that they can be in Vegas to actually witness the event.
Most of the different types of poker are played during the course of the World Series of Poker. Currently the event is set up with more than 45 different types of poker. However it is easy to see that Texas Hold ‘em is the favorite of poker players all over the world. More than half of the entrants in the World Series opt to play Texas Hold ‘em.
The World Series of Poker is a cash event. The way it is set up is very simple. When a contestant enters, part of their entry fee goes directly the casino. This is an entry fee. The rest of the player’s money goes into the overall pool. This more people who participate in the event, the bigger the collective pot, which means the bigger the final purse. Since there are more entries every single year, the winner is always getting a bigger purse.
Winning the World Series of Poker is a really big deal. One of the reasons that the winner is so revered is because they had to beat so many other world class poker tournament players to reach the winners circle. The other reason for the excitement a winner feels is because winning is so rare. There are lots of really, really good poker players who have yet to win the event, and even fewer to have won the event more than once.
The World Series of Poker is use to camera crews. It has been filmed ever since it began. When it was just a small group of elite poker players, the event was televised on CBS. Today the event is still shown on television; right now it is filmed by ESPN.
